Rocky Mount is the tandem office for the northeastern region of North Carolina.  It was originally established as a tandem for Carolina Telephone and Telegraph in April of 1974 with the installation of a No. 4XB tandem switch.  AT&T designated Rocky Mount as a primary office in its distance dialing network in the late 1950's.  A direct trunk group was established between Rocky Mount and Charlotte's Sectional office.  AT&T installed 4ESS equipment in June of 1982.  Today the office has fiber connections to Norfolk and Raleigh.

Waves is a unique office have been constructed on pilings to avoid being washed away in a hurricane. The office is on an extremely thin section of land off of Hwy 12. Really, a paved sandbar. Waves is the only office for 20 miles in any direction serving the sparse communities of Rodanthe, Waves and Avon (via a remote).  Waves has been damaged in some hurricanes and was battered with Isablle.
