VIRGINIA TELEPHONE CENTRAL OFFICE'S

These offices were originally Continental Telephone of Virginia (CONTEL).  General Telephone (GTE) acquired CONTEL in 1993 and operated the network as GTE Virginia.  In 1994 GTE Virginia was merged in to the GTE South business effectively removing CONTEL forever.  In June of 2000 Bell Atlantic and GTE merged to form Verizon South which continues to operate today.

AMHURST

APPOMATTOX

Verizon South

Note how cables enter the building at the roof line rather then underground through a cable vault.  A rare find as almost all cables enter through a vault as so to prevent an aesthetic nuisance.

Contel-GTE-Verizon South,

Was once a tandem office for the Norfolk LATA during the GTE days.

FARNHAM

FRANKLIN

A brand new CO!

The original CO was a single story brick structure located to the left of the current office and being a single story low ground structure was flooded and the original Nortel DMS remote switch destroyed.  A mobile central office was in place for about a year, maybe a year and a half while the current office was built and service cut over. However, this time the new office was placed on pilings and elevated several feet above the street to avoid any future floods. This is also why the two electrical transformers that serve the office are also on pilings.

Small remote switch.

PRINCESS ANNE

Very unique architectural style.

Located at what was once the seat for Princess Anne County this CO has bucked the traditional 70s style architecture inflicted on most traditional GTE COs. The only other office as "stately" or distinctive would be the CO in Smithfield.

ROCKY GAP
