CALIFORNIA STATE TELEPHONE CENTRAL OFFICE'S
|
AREA CODE 408/669
Area code 408, was a split of originally established area code 415 in 1959. The 408 area code served the Santa Clara Valley including the cities of San Jose, Sunnyvale, Los Gatos, Gilroy, Morgan Hill and Santa Clara. Traditionally, Pacific Telephone & Telegraph served the region except for a few pockets including the cities of Gilroy, Morgan Hill and Los Gatos. These three areas were served by Los Gatos Telephone Company and Western California Telephone Company until the 1970s when these properties were purchased by General Telephone of California. The region saw tremendous telephone growth with the boom of the Silicon Valley in the 1980s. Demand for phone, fax, pager and cellular service almost out paced the ability for the phone company to keep up with the constant growth. Today the area is still served by the legacy carriers Pacific Bell now AT&T and the three small pockets still being served by "independent" General Telephone now Verizon California. In November 2012, a new overlay area code 669 was assigned to provide additional telephone numbers to meet increasing demand from consumers.
