 CALIFORNIA STATE TELEPHONE CENTRAL OFFICE'S

AREA CODE 510

Area code 510 was split from the original 415 area code in September 1991, and established to provide telephone coverage for the East Bay and Oakland areas due to the tremendous amount of new cellular, fax and pager service requests. It is interesting to note, that the 510 code was originally used for AT&T's TeletypeWriter eXchange (TWX) service. This service was acquired by Western Union in 1969, and additional "10" codes were added to help define geographic areas. The special TWX codes were decommissioned in 1981, when Western Union upgraded to ASCII transmission.
