AREA CODE 530
One of the largest areas of the state is covered by area code 530. The code 530 was split from area code 916 in November 1997, and covers nineteen counties in the mostly sparsely populated, rural north and northeast portion of California. The region is wide spread and the larger cities are Davis, South Lake Tahoe, Red Bluff and Redding.

Although the office is located within California and the 530 area code, it is physically connected to the Garnerville, Nevada office and hence is part of the Reno, Nevada LATA which is rather unique. Yreka was originally built by Pacific Telephone & Telegraph
in the 1950s to replace manual toll equipment. The office eventually
was designated a Toll Office (Class 4) under the AT&T Direct Distance Dialing
hierarchy in the
1970s and had direct trunk groups to the Redding Class 3 Primary Office. Yreka was the toll office to the offices
along the Interstate-5 corridor at the extreme upper portion of California
just south of the Oregon border. The tributaries of Yreka were Gazelle,
Grenada, Hilt, Hornbrook, and Montague. After the divestiture of the
Bell System in 1984, Yreka was removed as toll office classification and
