HIGH DESERT CENTRAL OFFICES
CALIFORNIA
The "High Desert" is a region that is made up of portions of Kern and San Bernardino Counties and for the most part is rural Mojave desert separated by lonely stretches of highways and few communities. The southern region (Apple Valley, Hesperia) is starting to grow and has become an affordable alternative to housing for those who work in Los Angeles and the Inland Empire.
Telephone service in the High Desert has mainly been dominated by the independent companies. Initially the majority of this area was without phone service or was served by long toll stations or party lines that were sometimes unreliable. Some of the larger communities had central offices and early service was provided by Continental Telephone Company, California-Interstate Telephone Company and General Telephone Company. After Verizon purchased both GTE and Contel, the majority of telephone service is now provided by Verizon.
