Stockton Main is the Tandem office for the SBC northern valley
region and AT&Ts Toll Office. At one time Stockton
had microwave service see: Northern California Microwave Sites Page 2
During the Long Lines period, AT&T classified Stockton as a Class 2 Sectional office. Direct trunk connections were established between Stockton and the Fresno primary office and Sacramento Regional office. Stockton had L-3 cables to Lodi and a branch connected to Manteca (part of the Modesto-Hayward cable). Today fiber connects Stockton with Lodi, Fresno, Sacramento, Oakland and Modesto. Yreka was originally built by Pacific Telephone & Telegraph
in the 1950s to replace manual toll equipment. The office eventually
was designated a Class 4 "Toll office" under the direct dialing plan in the
1970s and had direct trunk groups to the Redding Class 3 Primary Office. Yreka was the toll office to the offices
along the Interstate-5 corridor at the extreme upper portion of California
along the Oregon border. The tributaries of Yreka were Gazelle,
Grenada, Hilt, Hornbrook and Montague. After the divestiture of the
Bell System in 1984, Yreka was removed as toll office classification and
