UTAH STATE TELEPHONE CENTRAL OFFICE'S

AREA CODE 801

Original Area code 435 was split off the original Utah state area code of 801 in September 1997 as a way to manage phone growth in the Salt Lake City region. The 435 area code covers all the state of Utah except for the Wasatch Front in north central part of the state including the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The area was traditionally served by Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph at the turn of the 20th century and provided service over the next 50 years until Mountain Bell took over operations. After divestiture in 1983, US West assumed ownership of the Mountain Bell properties and eventually become Qwest and now Century Link. Independent company South Central Utah Telephone Association serves many of the rural communities in the southern portion of the state.
