C&P Telephone company of DC then Bell Atlantic now Verizon Washington DC. Complex is made up of 3 buildings. First one on the left was the original C&P office from the 1920s. Middle building is an addition from ~1950's while the attached building further right is reminiscence of a ~1970s addition. |
WASHINGTON DC "SOUTHWEST"

The big one. This is the Tandem office for the Washington DC area and the AT&T toll switch. During the direct distance dialing transition in the early 1950's, Washington DC was one of the first offices to be placed in the network with the addition of a #A4A switching machine in September of 1950. Coax cable connected the office to Richmond and Baltimore. #4ESS was added in 1978. This office was a sectional center with direct trunks to the Baltimore primary and Pittsburg Regional office. |
