AT&T TOLL OFFICE

  Although a unique situation in "Bell" territory (Pacific Bell), the Bakersfield AT&T toll office is physically separated (by a few city blocks) from the Pacific Telephone (Bell) Tandem office.  The reason was, when AT&T constructed the Bakersfield toll office in the late 1950's telephone service to the region was provided by Central California Telephone Company then an independent and non-Bell operating company.  Pacific Telephone later took over Central California Telephone, yet AT&T remained at its original site.  Bakersfield was a primary office under Direct Distance Dialing and had a direct trunk group to the Los Angeles Sectional Center.  Early microwave points connected Bakersfield to Mt. Adelaide, Temblor Range and Taft.  Early fiber routes connected Bakersfield to Newhall and Fresno.  Today the office has major fiber connections to Fresno, Lodi, Palmdale, Newhall, Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles and Visalia.
