VIRGINIA TELEPHONE CENTRAL OFFICES
Virginia has been historically served by numerous telephone companies including the bell franchise, The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia, and various independents including, Continental Telephone Company, Central Telephone Company and smaller rural independents. Today the Verizon company operates under to separate banners in Virginia; Verizon South and Verizon-Virgina, both are under corporate Verizon but operate as separate companies for regulatory purposes.
Most of these are rural CO's using remote switches and serve no more then one prefix. Note the brick construction of the various offices reminiscent of the very common "red brick" architectural styles of homes and buildings on the Eastern Seaboard. When compared to the CO's on the West Coast, I have not come across a red brick design for a central office. Most are the concrete brick, precast concrete wall or cinder block design, allowing reinforcement from earthquakes.
